My Experience:
So i had it happen to me. I upgraded the Flex wireless lan controller 7500 series from code 8.1.131.0 to 8.2.141.0 and made a boeboe. I did everything right and rebooted the controller without setting the correct boot image!!!
Challenge:
-2000+ Access points needs to download the new code from the wireless lan controller.
-You have limited downtime(change window)
Solution Summary:
This needs to be done within a change window, but i didn’t have that much time to do it and did the below:
Upload new code to WLC (Do not reboot once done)
Set one of the access points on each group as the master access point
once the master access point downloaded it’s code all the access points in the same group will get their software code/image locally from the master access point instead of pulling it from wlc over the wan
The new code will be set as the backup code and will only take effect once the controller reboots
Environment:
2000+ Access Points at mulitple sites
Each site has it’s own Flex and AP group
All access points registers to the controller remotely
Layer 3 broadcast method
File transfer mode: TFTP
Application:TFTPD32
Step one: obtain software code
I Downloaded the new code from the Cisco website
Step two: configure tftp server on local computer
Configure TFTP Server:
Point the current directory to the location of the new downloaded software code
note down the server interface address(ip address), this will be used in step 3 when you set the tftp server on the WLC
Step 3: upload new software code
I uploaded it to the Flex WLC:
Click on the commands tab
Click on the download tab on the left hand side
set the file type to “code”
set the transfer mode to “tftp”
set the server ip address( found in step two, the server interface address)
Maximum retries “10”
Timeout “6”
Filepath “/”
File name “_NAME OF DOWNLOADED CODE”
Click on Download (button found to the top right of the screen)
*If this fails please confirm that you are able to ping the wireless lan controller and that your computers firewall is turned off
ONCE THE NEW SOFTWARE IS UPLOADED****DO NOT REBOOT****
Step 4: Set master AP
Click on the wireless tab
Click on FlexConnect groups on the left hand side
go in the relevant ap flex connect group
Click on the Image upgrade tab.
make sure their is a tick on the “flexconnect ap upgrade” box
Ad the master access point and click Apply.
Once this is done all the access points in the group will obtain their software code from the master access point instead of riding the capwap tunnel over the wan
Once all the access points downloaded their code SAVE YOUR CONFIGURATION, SET THE NEW SOFTWARE CODE AS THE PRIMARY IMAGE and REBOOT the controller
The wireless lan controller and the access point will come up with the new software code and the only real downtime was when you rebooted the controller.
